AECM participates in initiatives for cooperation with Africa and the Mediterranean regionNews - 22/12/2011
Over the months of November and December, AECM has participated in a number of conferences aimed at developing access to finance and guarantee systems in Africa and in the Mediterranean Region. The first initiative was an Africa – EU session organized by Commissioner Tajani in the context of the SME Finance Forum on Wednesday, 23rd November 2011.
The theme of the forum was to share good practices in access to finance for SMEs. The event was the first occasion for stakeholders from both continents to exchange views and express main challenges on accessing sources of financing for SMEs. In the second panel on guarantees, Mr. Jose Figueiredo, Chairman of AECM, set forth his experience as chairman of SPGM and its cooperation with African countries such as Cape Verde, Angola and Mozambique. He tackled the issue of cultural differences which require an adaptation of the structure for any guarantee scheme to be set up in an African country, e.g. given the fact that many beneficiary companies are micro or informal and the marketing implications related to this. There are many challenges that require a strong collaboration and adequate funding.
AECM also participate in meetings with the Commission and the Union for the Mediterranean to provide its input and expertise with a view of strengthening the exchange of best practices and know-how between Guarantee institutions around the Mediterranean region.
